Living the Outdoor Life Style

test2Welcome one and all to my web page. This used to be my business web site but now is home to the chronicles of by bothers and I as we hike and backpack in the western United States. You can also see some of the hiking I did while living in Europe in 2007.

Being in the great outdoors again after many years away, has opened my eyes to the environment and what is happening to it. The more people get out into it, the more they will appreciate what we will be missing if more is not done to preserve it.

I am planning to keep the Altiris documentation on line for those that find those docs helpful but the new theme is all backpacking all the time. If anyone still needs a resume or information on me please use this link.

7My brothers and I have committed to backpacking once a year and, in that effort, have become quit good at planning and preparation. Between all of us we have some good experiences from past ventures. I am a former Army paratrooper who spent two years in the jungles of Panama. Rees is a graduate and adjunct teacher of the Wilderness Awareness School and currently runs an outdoor awareness camp for children.

Common Sense Clause

Learning to live life

After nearly 8 years as a road warrior, including 8 months in Europe working on the DHL / Altiris project, I just had to get off the road both for me and my wife. In many ways I will miss the life but I learned one thing working in Prague in 2007. The life I was leading on the road was not living at all. People actually get together after work to do things. I made life long friends while in the Czech Republic; something that I was not able to do traveling. These are people that I chat with on a daily basis now that I am back in the States. There is a life after work such as having dinner with family or friends.

I now work from home, which allows me to say good bye to the not so friendly skies and sadly Marriott's hospitality.

I hope all of you enjoy the backpacking information on my site.

Rant of the month

Ecology marketing strategy is all wrong for American

I was sitting here thinking that I need to update this website with the pictures from the trip to Payson Arizona,  when I saw an ad telling all of us about how important the environment is and that if “you don’t do you part” you are contributing to the plants demise.

If the Ad Counsel, or however put this marketing scheme together, though this was the way to American’s ecological hart, they need a reality check. Here are some facts:

Even if America went green today, the pollution from India and most of Asia would be enough to keep the cycle of global warming going. This is NOT to say that we should do nothing – remember, I am for saving the planet –but that this has to be a global effort if we really want to save the place and America is the place to start.

The issue is that all of these alternative energy sources are being sold as "save the planet technology" but as per my paragraph above, this is not going to really have that much affect worldwide and we know it.

Rather than saying “Buy solar, save the planet”. How about, “Buy solar and you will not have an electric bill”. Here in Arizona that is $450 per month in the summer. “Buy a hybrid and cut your gas expense by 75%.” These are the kind or marketing tools that work in this country.

Most of the US economy from manufacturing has gone overseas, unless that is, if the companies are taking TARP or any other funding from the government. With this in mind, reinventing US was Information Technology in the 80’s and 90’. Why not solar and other alternative sources of energy in this century.

I have to admit that more than anything else; I too want to save money.
